Monetary evolution, conscious software, and Estonia's next leap forward.
EFTI is an independent research, education, and software-building institute exploring how money, software, and digital intelligence can support human development, cooperation, and the public good.
The systems shaping our shared future
Money shapes how society measures, stores, and exchanges value. Software and artificial intelligence increasingly shape how information moves, how knowledge is created, and how people and institutions make decisions and act. Communities and public institutions determine how these capabilities become meaningful collective action.
EFTI studies these layers together. We explore how new base money, conscious and sovereign software, and responsible uses of artificial intelligence can strengthen human agency, cooperation, societal resilience, and the public good.
Evolution of Money
Money, Bitcoin, and a New Foundation
Money is one of humanity’s central systems of coordination. EFTI explores its evolution as a whole — from the individual relationship with value and exchange to societal monetary systems, technology, and base money.
Within this evolution, Bitcoin holds a distinct role: scarce, globally open, and independently verifiable money introduces the possibility of a new neutral monetary foundation.
Conscious software
AI and sovereign infrastructure
Software and AI increasingly shape how people learn, create, decide, and act. EFTI explores technology that strengthens human agency, cooperation, and trust, supported by sovereign and cryptographically verifiable digital infrastructure.
Collective intelligence
Estonia's digital leadership
Technology creates lasting value only when people, communities, and institutions can understand and apply it wisely. EFTI connects global developments in money, software, and AI with education, local life, public institutions, and Estonia's next societal leap.
Learning Environment
9D Money
A unique educational framework for understanding money. 9D Money brings the developmental dimensions of money and self into view, placing historical monetary systems, the current transition, and future possibilities into a broader perspective.
Topics
Evolution of Money and a New Monetary Foundation
Money is one of humanity’s most important systems of coordination. It shapes how value is perceived, measured, stored, exchanged, and carried across time. The evolution of money therefore reaches far beyond finance: it affects human behavior, economic relationships, institutions, technology, power, and freedom.
EFTI approaches money systemically and developmentally. We see money not merely as a medium of exchange or a financial asset, but as a multidimensional phenomenon where the individual, society, and technology meet. Different forms of money solve different problems and reflect different developmental needs.
Within this longer evolution, Bitcoin holds a distinct place. We do not view it merely as a new asset class, an investment product, or a technological experiment. Bitcoin introduces a new potential form of base money: scarce, globally accessible, politically neutral, and independently verifiable.
It combines qualities historically associated with strong forms of money — scarcity, durability, portability, and independence — with a digital protocol that operates across geographic and institutional boundaries.
EFTI’s work seeks to distinguish short-term market noise from the deeper evolution of money. We explore its individual, economic, historical, technological, and societal dimensions, while developing educational models that help people understand these layers as an interconnected whole.
Through this work, we help individuals, businesses, public institutions, and the Estonian state engage with monetary change consciously, systemically, and responsibly. The goal is not merely to understand a new technology, but to build readiness for a world in which money is becoming more global, digital, open, and independently verifiable.
Digital intelligence and sovereign infrastructure
Software increasingly shapes how people communicate, learn, work, create, and make decisions.
With artificial intelligence, software is becoming more active: it can interpret information, generate knowledge, coordinate processes, and act on behalf of individuals and institutions.
The central question is therefore no longer only what software can do. We must also ask what kinds of behaviour, relationships, institutions, and society it helps create.
EFTI develops the idea of conscious software: technology designed with awareness of its effects on people, communities, and the living world. Such software should strengthen human agency rather than dependency, support learning rather than passive consumption, and make cooperation, responsibility, and trust easier.
This perspective applies across the entire technological stack—from user experience and artificial intelligence to data ownership, governance, cybersecurity, and cloud infrastructure.
Today's digital systems rely heavily on centralized platforms, fragmented service providers, and institutional trust. EFTI therefore also explores sovereign and cryptographically verifiable software foundations that can give users and institutions greater control over their systems and data.
The Internet Computer Protocol is one of EFTI's principal infrastructure research areas because it offers a holistic, full-stack foundation for software. Application logic, data, identity, digital assets, governance, and web services can operate within one unified cryptographic cloud environment.
ICP can support entirely new applications while also extending traditional enterprise and governmental technology stacks with greater resilience, verifiability, security, and digital sovereignty.
Estonia as a innovation hub for the next societal leap
Technology reaches its real purpose through people, communities, and institutions. New tools alone do not create wiser societies. They must be understood, shaped, and applied in ways that strengthen learning, cooperation, responsibility, and the public good.
EFTI connects global developments in money, software, and artificial intelligence with Estonia's national direction and local life. We explore how individuals and institutions can make sense of rapid change, develop shared understanding, and turn knowledge into meaningful collective action.
Estonia's first digital leap showed how a small and flexible society can create globally significant change. The Tiger Leap, digital identity, and interoperable public services helped establish Estonia as a leading digital nation.
A new transition is now beginning. Artificial intelligence, programmable money, autonomous software, and sovereign digital infrastructure are changing how society organizes information, distributes agency, and makes decisions.
Estonia's next leap should not be measured only by faster services or greater automation. It should also strengthen human capability, societal resilience, local communities, democratic participation, and our relationship with nature.
EFTI contributes through education, public dialogue, research, learning programmes, community experiments, and a small number of carefully chosen software projects. Starting locally and connecting globally, we aim to help Estonia become an innovation hub for technology that genuinely serves people and society.
About the Foundation
EFTI — the Estonian Finance and Technology Institute — is an independent foundation for systems research, education, and purposeful software development. Its distinctive role is to connect fields that are usually examined separately and to place technological and monetary change within a wider view of human development, society, and the public good.
EFTI approaches technological development within a broader systems context rather than through isolated solutions or passing trends. Its purpose is to create clarity around foundational change, develop original frameworks, and translate deeper understanding into education, public dialogue, and carefully chosen practical work.

The Institute grew out of more than four years of educational, conceptual, technological, and community work around the "Bitcoin on haritus" and "Crypto Cloud" frameworks. EFTI was established by Eerik Potter and is supported by a supervisory board that helps ensure transparency, responsibility, and alignment with the Foundation's public-interest purpose.
